Tis the time for New Year’s Resolutions. If not for the ‘RONA’, the gyms would be packed, and you would be fighting for equipment. Fast food joints get their much-needed break from the slam that was thanksgiving to Christmas for all those “I need to eat healthier” peeps. For those looking to get back on a budget, there is no more shopping sprees, and for those who realized, HOLY Crap Christmas murdered my bank account, there is no shopping of any kind happening right now.
Some people have goals of relieving stress, finding a better job, changing careers, changing lifestyles, focusing on self-care, eliminating toxic peeps from their inner and outer sphere, the list could go on and on.
One thing I hear all the time though is, “This New Year… new me!”
I say flip that!!! Why a whole new you? First off, maybe a bit of ‘I bit off more than I can chew’, because seriously, you would need far more than a year for that nonsense. Yes, I know it is an expression and perhaps not a literal use of ‘whole new you’ but my point remains. To try to reinvent the whole of you is sad to me. I try to live life full of love, in every aspect. Yes, we are negating my sassy tongue of course, and my, you mess with my family or friends and I will cut a witch attitude. And let’s not forget my always coveted “Tangry Phase” (when I am tired, I get angry, similar to those peeps who get angry when they are hungry). But the journey I have been on is allowing myself to love myself as much as I show love to others. Through this journey, I realize that by reinventing the whole of you, is to take away what makes you, you. The ‘one of a kind’ aspect of being a human, of being you.
I firmly believe in ‘CAN I’, something I stole from a friend long ago, ‘Constant And Never-ending Improvement’. New Year’s Resolutions are exactly that for me. A simple improvement on an aspect of your life, your health, your wealth, or your happiness. And h-e-double-hockey-sticks, I am all about setting a slew of goals for yourself. Get that list and rock it sister! But please don’t think for even a moment that the current you isn’t worthy of love, love from others and love from yourself.
So yes, every human being has something amazing about them, something they can improve upon, and something they can change. That list may favor one side of the spectrum over the other or have little to focus on or a slew to work on.
Me, mine is fairly simple this year depending on how you look at it. My New Year’s Resolutions are to focus on the following; LOVE for my family, for others, and for myself; SELF-CARE and HEALTH are absolute priority for me to try to heal from Traumas and from what has been a pretty shitty health journey the last couple years; and PURPOSE and focusing on the things that already give me purpose in life, namely my family, but also identifying my purpose beyond that, and how I can contribute in this crazy town of a world we live in now.
So, get your list, begin the journey, to the ‘better you’ not the new you. Go kill those resolutions and loose that weight, get that promotion, and or delete those toxic peeps. Improve your life, because you do only get one. Go be that better version of yourself you know you can be, and this time next year reflect on what you accomplished and what goals that still need some work. Just remember to keep the bits and pieces of you that make you, you. Cherish those aspects and foster them. Because the reality is, with every new year that you see, it just means that is one more year closer to your last. Don’t waste your years trying to reinvent your whole self, pick a few aspects to improve upon, some to eliminate, and those to embrace. Then when you are close to your last, you can look back with pride for who you are and all the amazing qualities that make you, you…and hopefully it will lead to a pretty amazing view with the man upstairs.
